Moving Into a New Apartment in Accra? Your Home Services Checklist

Moving into a new apartment in Accra is exciting, but before you start arranging furniture, there are important things to check and fix. Whether you're moving into a brand new build in Spintex, a renovated flat in Osu, or a family home in East Legon, this checklist will help you settle in properly.

Before Moving Day

1. Get a Deep Clean Done

Never assume a new apartment is clean. Even brand new builds have construction dust, debris, and sometimes paint splatters everywhere. A professional deep clean should cover all rooms, bathrooms, and kitchen, inside all cabinets and wardrobes, windows inside and out, floors (tiles, wood, or cement), fans, light fixtures, and AC vents, and balcony and outdoor areas.

2. Check All Plumbing

Turn on every tap and flush every toilet before you move in. Check for leaking taps and pipes, proper water pressure in all rooms, hot water functioning (if applicable), toilets flushing properly, drains flowing freely (pour water and watch how fast it drains), and no damp or mould spots on walls or ceilings. If you find issues, get them fixed before moving your belongings in. Water damage to furniture and electronics is expensive.

3. Test All Electrical Systems

Check every socket, switch, and light fixture. Test all power outlets with a phone charger or lamp, make sure all light switches work, check the circuit breaker panel (it should be labelled), test any existing fans and built-in lights, verify the doorbell and any intercom systems, and check for exposed wires or damaged outlets. If anything seems off, hire a qualified electrician before you move in. Electrical faults are a fire hazard.

4. Service the AC Units

If the apartment has AC, get it serviced before you start using it. AC units that have been sitting unused accumulate dust, mould, and sometimes dead insects. A proper service includes cleaning or replacing filters, checking refrigerant levels, cleaning the indoor and outdoor units, testing all functions, and checking the drain line for blockages.

5. Inspect Paintwork and Walls

Look for cracks, peeling paint, damp spots, and mould. In Accra's humid climate, these issues get worse over time. If you're renting, document everything with photos and share with your landlord. If you own the place, get a painter to address any issues early.

6. Check Locks and Security

Change the locks when you move in — you don't know who has copies of the old keys. Also check that all windows lock properly, security doors and gates work, and any existing alarm or camera systems are functional.

After Moving In

Set up a regular cleaning schedule (weekly or bi-weekly), schedule AC maintenance every 6 months, have your plumber and electrician contacts saved, check drains before rainy season, and keep a basic toolkit for minor fixes.
